The Mediterranean Diet: A Catalyst for Longevity

Numerous studies have established the connection between the Mediterranean Diet and increased longevity. This association is underpinned by one fundamental observation: the inhabitants of the Mediterranean region who follow this diet enjoy a significantly longer life expectancy. However: What specific characteristics of this diet contribute to a prolonged and enhanced quality of life? How can these eating habits positively influence different aspects of our lives?

Ingredients of the Mediterranean Diet

The Mediterranean Diet has intrinsic nutritional and social characteristics for which it has been designated as an Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity since 2010. Some of its distinguishing features are the use of olive oil as the primary ingredient, and its high consumption of legumes, unrefined cereals (including traditional bread), fruits, vegetables, and nuts.

Additionally, this is also complemented by a low consumption of meat and its by-products, along with moderate intake of dairy products

Beneficial Health Effects

Widespread research has suggested that a diet rich in these foods yields long-term health benefits. Evidence indicates that olive oil may play a crucial role in preserving cognitive function and physical performance in later life. In this context, following a Mediterranean diet is associated with a reduced risk of cognitive decline and a lower incidence of neurodegenerative diseases, such as Alzheimer’s.

Flavonoids—found in foods such as onions, broccoli, tomatoes, citrus fruits, and grapes—are recognized as some of the most powerful antioxidants in the human diet. Furthermore, the monounsaturated fats in olive oil have been shown to increase HDL cholesterol (the “good” cholesterol), while the consumption of fruits and vegetables is linked to protective effects against cancer.

Longer and Higher Quality of Life

Although the relationship between diet and quality of life has not been extensively studied, optimal aging entails not only longevity but also a high quality of life. The Mediterranean Diet supports this ideal, promoting an active lifestyle with an emphasis on enjoyable meals.

Overall, biological evidence shows that following the Mediterranean Diet contributes to improved overall health and an extended lifespan, with a lower incidence of cardiovascular and cognitive diseases.

Nutritional Plans Based on the Mediterranean Diet

At ZEM Wellness Clinic Altea, we have established the Mediterranean Diet as the foundation of our four nutritional plans, which serve as the backbone of our health and wellness programmes.

Furthermore, all menus at the Salvia restaurant are thoughtfully prepared using local, organic ingredients sourced from our own 75,000 m2 farm, Finca Althaya, where fruits, vegetables, and greens are cultivated sustainably.

Ultimately, integrating elements of the Mediterranean Diet into our daily lives is a decisive factor in achieving a longer and more fulfilling life.
