Altea, the idyllic location where you will find ZEM Wellness Clinic

ZEM Wellness Clinic is located in Altea, a remarkable location overlooking the Mediterranean. This picturesque village, with its iconic white houses and cobbled streets, is crowned by its church’s magnificent blue dome, which has earned it the nickname “the dome of the Mediterranean”.

According to legend, the name Altea either derives from the Greek word “Althaia”, meaning “I heal”, or from the Andalusian Arabic term “attalaye”, which translates as “watchtower”. Over the centuries, numerous cultures have inhabited this enchanting enclave, contributing to its rich historical tapestry.

The Greenwich Meridian crosses Altea, dividing the world into two hemispheres, creating an atmosphere where time seems to stand still and inspiring an exceptional sense of peace.

A prime Destination in the Mediterranean

Owing to its unique location, nestled between the mountains and the Mediterranean, Altea has been the residence of choice for many cultures over the centuries. Evidence of prehistoric settlements can be traced back to the Phoenicians, Iberians, Greeks, and Carthaginians.

In 711 AD, the town was conquered by the Muslim kingdom and became part of the Taifa of Denia. It was then reconquered in the 13th century and received its population charter from King Pedro III of Aragon in 1279. During the Renaissance, Altea emerged as a fortified town, witnessing the construction of a formidable wall, two of whose gates still stand today.

Modern Altea and Its Maritime Connection

The rich historical heritage of Altea has become home to a cosmopolitan and multicultural community. Today, the sea once again takes centre-stage in this vibrant town, which continues to develop in harmony with the Mediterranean.

Visitors can meander through its enchanting streets, stroll along the seafront promenade swayed by a gentle breeze, explore its fishing port and engage with the local fishermen, or enjoy some of the many leisure activities on offer at one of its three marinas: Campomanes (Marina Greenwich), the Altea Yacht Club, and Porto Senso.

Immerse yourself in the essence of the Mediterranean and allow its unique charm to captivate you.

A City of Art and Beauty

Altea’s distinctive character has made it a source of inspiration for a diverse spectrum of artists. Painters, writers, and musicians have found its streets to be a sanctuary of creativity and relaxation, as shown by its numerous art galleries, exhibitions, and the impressive Palau Altea auditorium, which hosts a varied programme throughout the year. It also serves as the permanent home of the Miguel Hernández University of Elche, devoted to artistic studies.
